Can We Stop Invasive Milkweed? A Field Experiment in the Kiskunság

2026.10.30

How can we help nature recover when an invasive plant takes over? In the Kiskunság Sand Ridge, common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is a major obstacle to the natural regeneration of abandoned farmland and the recovery of valuable sandy grasslands.

In our new short film, "Stopping the Unstoppable? – Common Milkweed", researchers from our Restoration Ecology research group take us into the field to explore whether regular mowing and sowing native sandy grassland species can help control this invasive plant and support the recovery of grassland vegetation and arthropod communities.

Join our researchers to discover how milkweed arrived in the Kiskunság, why it is so challenging to control, and how a field experiment works in practice. You'll also learn how pitfall traps help researchers study the small creatures living in these habitats.
